Yorkshire Fisheries, Blackpool

There are more chip shops in this seaside town than you can shake a stick of Blackpool rock at. Many of them are on the long prom around the Central Pier area. However, the Chip Fiends chose to visit Yorkshire Fisheries that stands on a street behind the Winter gardens. We had read the chip shop / restaurant's website and were suitably impressed by the menu, and the fact that the business had been running since 1905.

We arrived one lunch time and were welcomed by some very friendly staff, one of whom showed us to a table and asked us to call them over when we had made our choices from the menu.

One of the Fiends had a lunchtime special: standard sized cod, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and mug of tea. The fellow Chip Fiend had standard sized haddock, mushy peas and half chips (a smaller portion for those who prefer a lighter meal). They also had a mug of tea. When we ordered, the waitress asked if we wanted a lighter batter too. Such is the attention to detail that is given to customers' preferences.

After a few minutes the food arrived and was every bit as delicious as it had promised to be. When we asked for tartare sauce, it was brought to us in a squeezy bottle. We were surprised by this, as some restaurants often skimp on this sauce, either providing it in sachets, or tiny ramekins. So this was another plus.

The fish was perfectly cooked. Fresh, delicious and encased in a light, crispy batter. The chips were nice and chunky and the mushy peas were perfect.

All in all this was a highly satisfying treat and just what you need on a visit to the seaside... We did wonder about the controversial name of the Yorkshire Fisheries in Lancashire's most famous resort though!

Other fish on the menu here includes scampi, fish cakes, halibut, tuna steak, plaice and swordfish. You can also order your cod and haddock in king size, which Yorkshire Fisheries describe as 'whoppers'.
