The Cods Scallops, Long Eaton

The latest addition to the small chain of chip shops opened in Long Eaton town centre in February this year.

The Chip Fiends arrived for a sit down meal and were guided to one of the few empty tables. It was very busy for a Tuesday evening.

We knew what we wanted; cod and chips, haddock and chips and baked hake with salad. Curry sauce, mushy peas and a scallop as extras.

We had just a little time to note the plastic lobsters in the basket light shades. A nice touch. The rope wrapped around the pillars made one of us comment that they looked like giant cat scratching posts.

The food arrived carried by two waitresses.
The cod was requested with curry sauce and the haddock with mushy peas. Somewhere between the fryer and our table they forgot which fish was which.

It became a muddle where the ramekins of peas and curry sauce were swapped but they were confident we had the right fish and blamed someone behind the counter for the error.

I stuck the knife and fork into my battered fillet expecting cod. It was haddock. At least the diner that ordered hake got what they wanted! They remarked that the hake was delicious; baked with lemon and garlic.

The food was excellent as expected; chips that are crispy outside and fluffy inside, light and crispy batter on succulent white fish. Long Eaton really have a good choice of chippies, what with Antonio’s, Long Eaton Fish Bar, Tennants and George’s.
