Marks Fish and Chips, Southwold

We'd been to this chippy many years ago and were due another visit.
Very little, if anything, has changed.

The front of the shop is the restaurant.
To the side of the shop is the entrance to the takeaway with a long counter and large space for frying.

Most of the tables were occupied but we wanted a takeaway to lunch by the sea.

We ordered cod and chips, one of us also had a gherkin with theirs. The fish was being fried to order which was most pleasing. The service was a little chaotic though, with the two serving not deciding who should deal with the restaurant and who should do the takeaway. There was also only one scoop for the chips so one member of staff had to wait until the other had finished with it before they could serve.

This meant that the fried to order cod stood in the display for around five minutes before  it was sold.

We walked out with a very nice looking pile of medium thin cut chips fried to a golden yellow colour and a thick portioned wedge of cod in an orange coloured batter.

The chips were delicious and quite soft and stuck together. We guess they were new potatoes. The cod had the skin on, which seems rare from experience. This was also delicious and had an excellent flakiness to it. The batter was very light and crisp, just how we like it.

The gherkin was as to be expected, loaded with vinegar and with a satisfying crunch.
