Our Favourite Chip Shops of 2017

It's that time of year again when The Chip Fiends reflect on their best chip shop experiences of the past twelve months. We are looking forward to eating our favourite nosh in 2018 and hope you will join us! In the meantime, enjoy our review of 2017…

The restaurant meal we tried at Albert J Ramsbottom in Northampton was perfect (see photo at the top of the page). We didn't go for the 'whopper' sized fish but the ones we had were still hanging over the edge of our plates. The 'special' with chips, peas, bread and tea was the most popular seller when we visited.

We also had an amazing restaurant meal at The Cods Scallops in Carrington, Nottingham. Not only are the fish and chips fantastic here, but the menu also serves delicacies such as battered scallops and fresh samphire tossed in butter.

The best seaside chippy we visited was Downey's Fish and Chips at Seaham in the North East. The queue outside the door was a sure sign of the shop's popularity. The fish, chips and langoustines were delicious. And our takeaway came loaded with optional scraps. This chip shop is a truly unique place!

The Little Fish and Chip Shop in Southwold was another seaside establishment who offered us quality food and service.

Kerry's Fish and Chips in Ilkeston, Derbyshire was a great find. This award winner serves fantastic fresh tasting fish and excellent mushy peas. We are looking forward to returning to try their small cafe.

Antonio's in Long Eaton is a small, unpretentious chippy that serves exceedingly good piping hot fresh chips. Their mushy peas are delicious and the freshly fried haddock we ate gave us beaming smiles!

Another memorable Derbyshire chip shop is Mrs. Seas in Loscoe. They don't have a cafe but customers of the Tip Inn micropub across the road are allowed to eat their fish and chips there on a Thursday night. We were understandably chuffed that we happened to visit on a Thursday! Mrs. Seas serve meal deals such as the 'cod slice' if you want a smaller portion of fish. Lovely.

Castleton Fish and Chips has long been a favourite of ours so we were pleased to find out this year that it was just as satisfying as it has always been. The Yorkshire fishcakes are particularly noteworthy.

The mini fish, chips and peas we had at B My Chip, Sutton Coldfield was the best good-value-for-money meal we had this year. Fantastic chips that were fluffy on the inside, delicious mushy peas, and succulent fish in a crispy batter... all for the bargain price of £3.30! The late Keith Chegwin had endorsed this chippy in 2009. A certificate for the 'perfect portion' was displayed on the wall.

Here's to another New Year of fish and chips. If you have any recommendations for chippies we haven't visited yet, do let us know!
