Ocean Breeze, Leicester

This chippy, tucked away on a terraced street on the edge of the city, boasts the sign "Serving since 1960" above the entrance. That's a lot of hours and a lot of chips. This shop is open
from 11:45 until 23:00 most days of the week.

They were busy frying some very nice looking potato fritters when this Chip Fiend arrived. I was told the fish would take seven to eight minutes to cook. Very good. It gave me time to note that this was a no frills chippy but very clean and tidy. I liked it.

The £5.30 meal was scooped into a lidded tray. Crikey, that's a lot of chips and the fish was pretty big too. "Is that good fish and chips?" the man serving said, clearly proud of his work, even though he didn't look particularly cheerful this day.

The chips were fantastic. Very thick cut and delicious. At first I was suspicious of the batter on the fish. It was smooth and thick looking. I need not have worried. Upon breaking it with a plastic fork it was not spongy, it was very crisp and flavoursome.

The skinless fish was very fresh, portioned thick and flakey. I was quite hungry so managed to eat the fish and all the batter, leaving only a few chips.

The plastic fork did break, as these type usually do.
