Castleton Fish and Chips, Derbyshire

Castleton is a picturesque village in the heart of the Peak District. Famous for the Blue John Caverns from which blue stones are extracted to make jewellery this place is also renowned for a Garland ceremony that takes place annually on Oak Apple Day, May 29th.

The Chip Fiends visited on this soggy bank holiday to take in a bit of local culture and to sample the fish and chips.

We have visited this chip shop several times in the past and have never been disappointed. We are pleased to say the food was excellent on our latest visit.

Between us we ordered cod, homemade fish cake, chips, and mushy peas. The service was cheerful and although the shop was busy, we managed to make it before the mad rush that would descend later once the Garland appeared on his horse.

The cod was excellent. Fresh and firm with a wonderfully crispy batter. The whole lot was eaten. Not a hint of sogginess. The homemade fish cake was similarly good. A proper Yorkshire fishcake consisting of a piece of fish sandwiched between two slices of potato and fried in batter. A bargain at £1.50.

Homemade Yorkshire Fish Cake

The mushy peas were the home-soaked variety. Starchy and delicious. The hand cut chips were a dark golden colour. Had they been more orange they might have reminded us of battered chips from the West Midlands.

The portion was sensible but generous, and although we didn't leave a scrap, there was absolutely no hint of stodginess: the sign of a very good chip shop.

There are plenty of benches inside and out even though this is a tiny, no-nonsense chippy.

Try Castleton Fish and Chip Shop if you are ever in the area. A visit here would be well-deserved after walking the Peaks.
