Milly's Fish Bar, Stapleford

Milly's looks tiny from the outside. When it is closed and the shutters are down, it looks about the same size as a domestic garage.

However, the long, narrow space inside has room for an eating counter with several bar stools should you want to eat in the shop.

Milly's have an interesting menu. As well as having rarer chip shop items such as spam fritters they also sell their own homemade curries including butter chicken, fish and goat. The menu asks you to pre-order these the day before, and they only sell them on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The Chip Fiends visited on a Friday lunch time and ordered mini fish, chips and mushy peas. We noticed a little heap of scraps on a piece of paper in the warming cabinet.

The gentleman serving was referring to male customers as 'Sir'. This and the overall quality of the service made for a happy experience. For example, we were asked if we wanted salt and vinegar put on the chips before the peas were ladled on top. We were also asked which fish we wanted from inside the cabinet.

There's a picnic bench outside Milly's so we sat there to eat.

The chips were very good. Medium chunky and hot. The peas were excellent. Definitely soaked on the premises. As good as the finest peas we've ever had. The fish had a good crispy batter but was slightly on the translucent side. It could maybe have had 30 seconds more in the fryer.

A great local chippy with that little something extra.

  1. Wouldn't go there. We ordered on line and the food was never delivered, tried phoning and no one answered, they have so many different phone numbers on the internet as well. Had to get our money back but no apology from them at all.

  2. Amazing chippy, personally I believe the fish to be 5/5 aswell as the other foods and the service. When ordering I either go into store or order on just eat and I never encounter any problems. The owner has really turned it around from the previous owner, a big well done to them.
