Fish Xpress, Kendal, Cumbria

Kendal is quite a small town and there are a handful of chippies in the centre. The Chip Fiends were going to pop into Frydays and eat our chips overlooking the River Kent. However it was closed 'due to unforeseen circumstances' on this day so we walked into town and found Fish Xpress.

This is a smart-looking chip shop / restaurant with a takeaway counter and tables indoors and out.

It was a busy Friday evening and there was a good flow of customers. We ordered fish and chips open, and a shared pot of mushy peas.

As we sat and waited for the order to be fried we had a look at the 'specials' on offer. Chips, cheese and gravy appears to be a popular delicacy in Kendal. Unsurprisingly Fish Xpress (and some of the other chip shops) serve Cumberland sausage - a long sausage cooked and served in a coil.

The meal was ready in a few short minutes and boxed. We sat outside to eat.

The fish had a good crispy batter and the chips were a dark golden colour and nicely crisp on the outside too.

The peas were a satisfying accompaniment to the meal but a tad on the stiff paste-textured side.

The bin outside the shop was filled to the brim so we took our empty takeaway cartons back inside for the shop to dispose.
