We had heard how good King Cod was so we went one Friday early evening. We ordered cod because it seemed most apt.
King Cod do a mini fish deal but we went for a full size at a bargain price of £4 a fish. It was a whopper.
We asked for our fish and chips 'open' which comes served in a box. You can take out or eat in as there are a few tables and chairs inside this chippy. We sat down and watched the steady stream of customers come in.
One customer was chatting to the staff saying how he liked how they fried their chips in small batches so that he always gets fresh tasting chips. We must concur, the chips here are excellent. Like chips should be! They were piping hot chunks of potato, with firm, square edges. Absolutely delicious.
The fish was excellent too. Perfectly cooked inside the batter. Fresh tasting and firm. There was quite a lot of batter, but if you're a batter fan then you'll like it at King Cod. It was standing up in jagged peaks as if it had hit some very hot oil and exploded!
The mushy peas were delicious too, with a natural colour. Slightly starchy and a pleasant accompaniment to the meal.
The portions are generous here. We had to give up before the end - we were defeated. It seemed a shame not to eat every single chip!
King Cod also serve haddock, plaice, cod roe and scampi, along with Pukka pies, cheese fry-its, sausages and kebabs. The potato fritters looked very good too.
