George's Tradition, Chilwell, Notts

I wonder if we have visited all of the George's Tradition chip shops now? We need to double-check!

We recently found ourselves in Chilwell on the outskirts of Nottingham. There's a small retail park here called West Point Shopping Centre near to Chetwynd Barracks. We wonder if there is a military procession to George's every Friday night?!

The Chip Fiends' visit was a little more relaxed and spontaneous. This branch of George's is small so we were surprised to find that there were several tables inside as well as one for al fresco diners overlooking the shopping parade.

We had the Meal Deal 1. Cod with chips and mushy peas. This was the small version but you can 'go large' for a little more money.

Sitting inside we observed the battalion of staff behind the counter assembling cardboard boxes of rations for the civilians waiting in line. Battered sausages, homemade battered fish cakes, and a battery of chips...

Our food was ready in no time. And excellent it was too. The chunky chips in irregular lengths and shapes had a rustic charm about them. The cod was pure white and sweet. The batter - although delightfully light and crisp on top - was a tad soggy underneath. The mushy peas were very good. A nice natural looking colour and very creamy.

This George's chippy was a great surprise and highly recommended if you are visiting the nearby tourist spot of Attenborough Nature Reserve. Bring your troops here. You'll be glad you did.
