The Cods Scallops, Carrington, Nottingham

The Chip Fiends visited the original Cods Scallops in Bramcote, Nottingham in 2014. Since then the same owners have opened another branch in the north Nottingham district of Carrington. We were keen to check out the new place and this time opted for a restaurant meal rather than a takeaway.

There is so much choice of fried fish on the menu that it's hard to make a decision. It's the kind of restaurant that demands repeated visits so that diners can work their way through the options.

On this occasion the Chip Fiends ordered cod, hake, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, buttered samphire, onion rings and a battered scallop. Fish and chips come with homemade tartare sauce, whilst side orders such as scallops come with a portion of Marie Rose sauce. There are bottles of homemade ketchup on the tables too.

This was undoubtedly one of the most satisfying chippy meals we had ever tried. The fish was delicious, with a light, crispy batter. The golden chunky chips were perfect and the peas and curry sauce were very good too. One of the Fiends commented that the peas had a delicate, almost-smoky flavour.

The sides of battered scallop and onion rings didn't let down either. The portion of onion rings was humungous and came in a small bucket. There would be enough here to share amongst a table of 4. The large scallop was sweet and tender. The samphire made a nice alternative to mushy peas too.

One of our party was a vegetarian. Although very fond of chips and mushy peas, some other veggie options might enhance the menu for non-fish eaters. Deep fried halloumi or mushy pea fritters for instance. (Incidentally we understand the chips here are fried in dripping).

This impressive restaurant pays a very good attention to detail. Lampshades are made from wicker crab pots. Place mats show images from saucy seaside postcards. The bill comes with pieces of Cods Scallops rock.

The Cods Scallops don't take reservations, so we suggest you get there reasonably early to ensure getting a table!
