Ripley's, Derbyshire

Formerly called The Crest of the Wave, Ripley's chip shop and restaurant is - unsurprisingly - in Ripley, Derbyshire.

The Chip Fiends were in Ripley one dark, chilly evening, and thought the best way to warm up would be to sit in Ripley's restaurant and enjoy some fish and chips. There are plenty of seats here. We noticed how big the restaurant was, with its three seating areas flanked by fish-themed murals and aquatic tiles.

Our meal of cod, chips and mushy peas came to £7.25. To this we added a small pot of tea. The tea was brought to the table while we waited a short while for the fish to fry. The meal was very good indeed. Medium-thin pale golden chips, a lovely fillet of cod in a thin, crispy batter, and some creamy mushy peas. These were accompanied by a piquant tartare sauce in a small ramekin.

This business was established in 1954, and is still going very strong judging by the amount of customers queuing for takeaways the day we visited. We recommend you eat here if you are ever in Ripley.
