KC Fish Bar and Cafeteria, Swadlincote

The Chip Fiends were visiting Swadlincote in Derbyshire. There was an exhibition on at Sharpe's Pottery Museum about the local boxer, Jack Bodell. After retiring from the ring, Jack opened a fish and chip shop in Coventry called The Knockout Fish Bar. It was opened by Jack's friend and 'former sparring partner' Muhammad Ali. This interesting little anecdote put us in mind for lunch...

On Swadlincote's High Street we found KC Fish Bar and Cafeteria, a large establishment, reminiscent of the types of fish restaurants one finds at the seaside.

We placed an order at the counter and sat inside to soak up the ambience. It was a Saturday lunch time and the shop was doing good trade with the takeaway customers. Chip cobs seemed to be a popular choice. We ordered haddock and chips (one 'small' with mushy peas, the other 'medium' with curry sauce). The meal was washed down with pots of tea.

The chips were hot and chunky with lovely straight edges. The (skin-on) fish deliciously fresh in a light, crispy batter. The curry sauce was thick and unctuous and the peas decidedly good too.

KC is recommended by us if you are a local, or if you are visiting 'Swad' for its famous dry ski slope.
