'Welcome To The Great British Tradition' reads a sign painted above the door of Birdy's in Stamford, a Georgian town in Lincolnshire.
The Chip Fiends had been to this town a few years ago to eat at Riverside. Birdy's is about a mile out of the centre, on the edge of a residential area and has been open since 1972.

We loved the look of this shop; a compact building with a flat roof. We visited at lunchtime on a Friday and it was busy with people ordering takeaways to drive home with, or eat in their cars parked outside.

The menu has some interesting items including a Dutch Smokey. We ordered cod and a medium sized portion of chips. We didn't expect the portions to be so big, a small portion of chips would have been adequate.
The chips were chunky and were very crisp outside and floury on the inside.

The skinless cod was portioned thick and coated in a light, crispy batter. It was deliciously sweet and so fresh. It really reminded us of eating fish and chips at the seaside.
