Johnny's Fish Bar, Ilkeston, Derbyshire

One of the Chip Fiends visited Johnny's in Ilkeston after hearing some good recommendations. It was a Friday lunchtime and fish 'n' chips were needed to hit the spot.

I wanted haddock, chips and mushy peas but was informed that the shop "only had a cod". This was sitting in the display cabinet. I got the impression the member of staff wanted to serve the lonely looking fish portion in the cabinet rather than fry up something new. I wouldn't have minded waiting but accepted the fish that was offered.

The meal was wrapped with dexterity in a paper cone. Salt and vinegar was sprinkled onto the chips before the fish was parked atop. I asked for the mushy peas in a separate pot.

There are no seats immediately outside the shop but I found some benches on a patch of grass called The Triangle, around the corner.

The chips were thin cut and tasty. A soft, creamy quality to the flavour, if a tad greasy. As with many of the chippies in Derbyshire, the portion was huge. I ate half and saved the rest to eat later as oven chips.

The fish itself was in large pure white flakes but unfortunately the batter was rather thick, and was soggy on the inside. I peeled the batter away. However, as you'll see in one of the photos below, it left a soggy residue on top of the chips which wasn't very palatable.

The mushy peas were proper mushy peas. Nice nuggets of whole soft peas in a sauce, with that slightly soapy flavour that real mushy peas have. The dye was a bit artificial though.
