The Laughing Halibut, London

Established in 1982, The Laughing Halibut is tucked away down a side street named Scrutton Ground, off Victoria Street, London. This is approximately halfway between Victoria Palace Theatre and the Houses of Parliament.

There's a great selection of fish on the menu here, with the halibut taking pride of place at the top of the list. Other fish includes cod, plaice, rock, skate, cod roe, scampi and calamari.

This Chip Fiend plumped for haddock - a regular bench mark for comparing with other chip shops I've visited.

The Laughing Halibut has a takeaway counter, but for a couple of pounds more per menu item you can eat in the restaurant. Service was brisk and friendly, despite the restaurant being busy. My £13.20 order of haddock, chips, mushy peas, and a mug of tea was on the table in under ten minutes.

The fish was very nice. A thin crispy batter - almost orange in colour - encased a good fillet of haddock. The chips were thin and crispy. I prefer them a little chunkier. The mushy peas came in a ramekin and were more like a thick paste rather than peas in a sauce. I added a splash of vinegar to perk them up a bit.

A wedge of juicy lemon made a good accompaniment to the fish and there were sachets of tartare sauce on the table.

If you're in the Westminster area and looking for somewhere that cooks homemade food relatively quickly, then The Laughing Halibut is definitely worth a try.
