Sutton and Sons, Stoke Newington

Sutton and Sons have three shops; Islington, Hackney and Stoke Newington. We decided to visit the Stokey one so we could see their wonderful fishmongers on the High Street too. An amazing place with an impressive display of fish on ice.

Further along the road on the opposite side was the takeaway and restaurant. We chose our table and a waitress brought over a menu.

We knew we wanted cod and chips but if we'd have wanted coley, plaice or monkfish these were also on the menu.

We didn't have to wait long before our dinner was ready. The large plate of cod and chips was nicely presented with a wedge of lemon and a dish of tartare sauce. The mushy peas were served in a separate ceramic pot.

The batter was a lovely golden colour and very crisp and light. Certainly some of the best batter we've ever eaten. The cod fillet was thick and succulent. It tasted so fresh and was cooked to perfection.

The chips were medium thick and very crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

The mushy peas were almost stone cold. This was a disappointment. What had gone wrong here was anyone's guess, as the fish and chips were piping hot. We dolloped a couple of spoons of green on the plates. It was a shame as it was a generous portion gone to waste.

We returned our attention to the delicious cod and chips and gobbled them down.
