Chish and Fips, Norwich

Established for over 70 years, Chish and Fips is a popular chip shop for locals in the north part of the city just beyond the old city walls. Follow the sign to 53 Angel Road.

As we arrived we saw a large van delivering potatoes.

This chippy sells cod, haddock and skate, as well as battered pizzas!

The Chip Fiends ordered a haddock. Cod is already portioned and priced but if you want a haddock or skate you'll need to request on entry. We ordered a portion of haddock at £5.

The server was chatty with the locals and newcomers alike (such as us). To one customer she simply said "the usual?" After a short wait in which we saw someone take away a battered pizza and a small bag of scraps (batter bits) our lunch was ready.

There are no places to sit in the immediate vicinity so we stood and ate.

The meal had a decidedly orange glow. The chips were chunky and golden, and the thin, crispy batter on the fish was invitingly golden too.

This was a firm, meaty piece of fish rather than a dainty and delicate fillet. It also had its skin on, some of which we ate. The chips were delicious and fluffy on the inside and tasted reassuringly of potato.

It was quite a generous portion of food so we had to bin some of it, unfortunately, even though it was very good. If you take your portion home you could freeze some for later use.
