Mackays Fish and Chips, Syston

The chip shop at a petrol station. Mackays has been open a few months and we've been wanting to visit ever since we heard about it.

The Chip Fiends arrived one evening and ordered cod, chips and mushy peas. The fish was cooked to order. We sat and watched a video on the screen above the counter that showed where the fish was caught.

We were called over and the food was boxed and bagged. We had asked for it "open" to the member of staff that took our order but someone else decided to takeover the service when the fish was cooked. Ho hum.
We had a car picnic. The food was piping hot.

The batter on the fish was very impressive; thin, light and very crispy. Just as the best batter should be. The cod was excellent also; succulent and sweet.
The chips were chunky. Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

The mushy peas (served in a plastic tub) tasted delicious and had a very thick consistency.

Mackays is definitely worth a visit if you're hungry and driving along the Fosse Way.
