Nick's Fish and Chips, Kettering

The Chip Fiends were in a Kettering pub one afternoon when they overheard a conversation about chip shops in the area. The discussion amongst the men stood at the bar concluded with them agreeing that the one on Rockingham Road was the best.

The chip shop on Rockingham Road is Nick's, a sign on the wall inside states they've had more than twenty five years in the business. It's a cosy little place, much reminiscent of Two Steps in Sheffield. The prices here are very reasonable too, with a regular portion of cod at £3.80. We noticed pea fritters and spam fritters on the menu also.

The portions here are what you'd describe as generous. One customer ordered a chip cob which appeared to be more like a mountain of chips with a bread roll hidden somewhere in the pile.

We ordered regular cod and chips, the cod wasn't cooked to order, it was in the heated display but it hadn't been out of the fryer long. As well as salt and vinegar, they have a bottle of peri-peri chip spice on the counter. We sprinkled some of this magic dust onto the chips too.

The batter was very pale, so pale we expected it to be a soggy mess, but it wasn't. It was very crisp and light. The cod was portioned very thick and was delicious.

The chips were medium cut and in all shapes and sizes. They were slightly on the greasy side but tasted very good; they tasted of deep fried potato. Something that a lot of chip shops fail to achieve.

Those men in the pub weren't wrong; Nick's is very good.
