Hills Fish and Chips, Stoke on Trent

Hills is hidden down a back street but is clearly well known enough to locals to keep this establishment open all day.

When the Chip Fiends visited on an early Friday tea time we noticed a huge plastic bathtub-sized container of raw chips ready for that evening's fry. The shop had numerous staff frying, wrapping and taking the orders.

There are several 'box' meals on the menu at Hills - all incredibly good VFM. One of them is called a 'Greedy Box' - £3.50 for a large tray of chips, a jumbo sausage, a fish cake and sauce of choice! We've never seen this type of meal offered before that combines a sausage with fish.

The Fiends had a cod box. Mini cod, chips and mushy peas for £3.50.

The plastic fork was rather small. Tricky to eat a fish with. Luckily the Chip Fiends came prepared with their own wooden fork.

The chips were excellent - as were the tasty mushy peas. The chips were medium cut with good, straight edges. They amalgamated with the peas, as they were served together in the tray. The mini cod was a good portion size for the price but had a greyish colour and didn't taste very pleasant.

Hills has been voted the best local chippy in Stoke. It's worth a look if you're ever in the area. If only to try out one of the unique 'box' meals.
