Frydays Fish Bar and Grill, South Shields

If you get off Newcastle's Metro train at South Shields, the first shop you will come across is Frydays. This chippy and restaurant is also opposite a bus interchange, so you've no excuse for not finding it!

Frydays is open during daytime hours so if you're visiting, be sure to get there before 6pm before it closes.

The Chip Fiends arrived one day with just enough time for a fresh haddock to be fried. The friendly staff let us sit in the restaurant to wait for our meal so it gave us a chance to take in the sophisticated ambience. The tables were set with cutlery and napkins. The last of the day's diners were finishing their late afternoon tea.

Our takeaway meal was served in a box so we carried it a short distance away and found a bench at the bus station.

The fish was delicious - very fresh tasting and with a light crispy batter. The Maris Piper chips were enhanced with a sprinkle of batter bits (scraps). Long and chunky, we could imagine they would've been great had we visited during peak hours when fresh supplies were being fried.

The peas made a nice thick sauce to dip the chips into.

All in all, a pleasant meal. Definitely worth a visit if you are passing through South Shields any time.
