Chris's Fish 'n' Chips, Hinckley and Barwell

Let's get to this one first. Hinckley.
We arrived on a Friday lunchtime. The shop must have had a large order by phone as they were busy wrapping individual portions for customers that weren't this side of the counter.

The chip fiends ordered mini fish and chips and a pot of mushy peas.

The chips were nice. A medium thick cut.
The batter was very thick and crunchy crisp. The fish inside had become fibrous and chewy. We're really not keen on fish cooked and placed in the heated display awaiting customers; fish is much better cooked to order.
The mushy peas were nice and good for dipping the chips into.

Now to Barwell.
We'd heard this shop had won numerous awards, so couldn't wait to fill our faces here.
Another lunchtime and a steady stream of customers. We noticed mini fish in the display so thought we'd give that a miss and order some freshly cooked haddock.

We were served by a member of staff in a heavily stained polo shirt who held the fish in place on the tray with his thumbs whilst he was serving.

There was a decent piece of skinless haddock to be found after chiselling some rather thick batter out of the way. There was a lot of batter, we had to discard it as we wouldn't have been able to taste the fish if we hadn't.

The chips were medium cut, very crisp and had a sort of translucent look about them. They didn't really have much flavour of potato. In fact, the overwhelming flavour was of grease. Quite disappointing.
