My Plaice Fish and Chips, Gorleston

Gorleston is a small seaside town just south of Great Yarmouth. In fact it sits literally at Yare's mouth.

My Plaice is an unpretentious, family-run chippy that has won several awards for excellence over the years. It is housed in a building dating back to 1717 and started business in 1956.

The Chip Fiends had heard that it was in the Top 50 of the National Fish and Chip Awards again in 2016 (a repeat from 2014 and '15) so we went to check it out.

My Plaice serve plaice, cod, haddock and skate. We plumped for our favourite haddock. The large portion was shown to us before frying. A lovely firm triangle of fish in a sensible fillet size. We waited about 6 or so minutes whilst a steady stream of lunch time customers came in.

We noted the banner underneath the counter proclaiming the 'award winning' status of the shop. There were also posters on the wall about how healthy fish and chips is in comparison to pizzas and doner kebabs. These types of posters are always displayed in chippies that care about their produce.

When our fish and chip meal was served up the lady behind the counter asked if we wanted to sprinkle salt and vinegar on the chips before she put the fish on top. This always impresses us!

We walked to the dock side to eat.

The fish was excellent. Very thin batter encased the fresh, pure white haddock which came apart in large firm flakes. Definitely one of the best fish we've tried this year. The chips were cut medium thick, and although nice, probably would have been better had we visited the shop about 15 minutes earlier.

A recommended chippy if you're near Gorleston. My Plaice is nearer to the town centre shops rather than the sands, and closes at 7pm.
