Castlegate Fish Bar, Newark on Trent

The Chip Fiends have previously visited and reviewed two other chippies in Newark - Bentley's and Appleton Gate, so it was time to sample the fare at Castlegate. This is a chippy we have eaten at in the past but not entered in our Chip Diary before.

Castlegate have an impressive menu for a small chippy that caters mostly for takeaways. You'll find haddock, cod, plaice, lemon sole and sea bass for sale here. They also serve a 'surf and turf' - a portion of cod with pulled pork for £8.25. There must be a call for this, or Castlegate wouldn't sell it, but why someone would want to eat cod and pork together seems very strange to us!

The Chip Fiends plumped for 'Fish and a Few for a Fiver'. This is a battered cod portion with a handful of chips. Good for light eaters or a lunchtime snack.

There are a couple of tables inside the shop, but we chose to eat beside the picturesque river Trent where boat tours embark from. This is a short walk across the road from the chippy.

The fish was excellent - cooked to order, it had a very light batter and the cod was fresh and firm. The chips were a bit tough and shardy, which was a pity as they were very good when we had them here before. Still it was a good lunchtime treat by the river.
