Shaw's, Newcastle-under-Lyme

Shaw's is a well known shop and restaurant that has been frying chips for almost a hundred years. We decided to visit on good recommendation and weren't disappointed.

The Chip Fiends had thought of getting a takeaway but as it was raining we decided to eat indoors. The restaurant at the back of the shop was very busy but we spotted an empty table as we ordered our food.

The small fish looked good so we chose the £4.49 meal of small fish, chips, mushy peas, slice of bread and a drink. Yes, all that for £4.49 was extremely good value.

Service was efficient and we were called to collect the food at the end of the counter.

The restaurant has cafe style seating; red plastic seats and Formica tables. We rather liked it.

We liked the food too.
The small fish was a good portion for lunch (we spotted a plate with the large fish, which was huge). The batter was crisp and delicious, the fish (skinless) was very fresh with firm white flakes.

The medium cut chips were also very crisp. We've heard that Shaw's add beef dripping to the cooking oil.

The mushy peas were very tasty too. We were very impressed with the lot.
