Sawley Catch, Derbyshire

The Chip Fiends were hungry and a little tired when we pulled up in a car one dark evening in Sawley.

The bright lights and large orange fish sign of Sawley Catch had drawn us in, and we knew a good portion of fish and chips would revive us.

This sparkling and compact local chippy was busy serving a mid-evening stream of customers but we didn't have to wait long for our takeaway.

One Fiend had the £4.50 special: mini fish, chips and sauce of choice (mushy peas was chosen on this occasion but you can also opt for beans, curry sauce or gravy). T'other Fiend had a large haddock with chips and peas.

This was the car picnic which we needed. The chips were top quality. Chunky, straight-edged and served very hot. The fish was also excellent. This Fiend didn't quite have room to eat all the batter, but made sure every last piece of the moist, white fish disappeared from the tray.

We are afraid to admit that the food was so delicious we greedily wolfed it down without taking a proper photo of the chunky chips... Which gives us an excuse to visit again some day.
