Pete's Fish and Chips, Nuneaton

This chippy was refurbished in 2015. When the Chip Fiends saw the photographs on Pete's Twitter account we knew we had to head there.

The shop is all gleaming white tiles and stainless steel. It's very impressive. You know as soon as you walk in that the food is going to be good quality.
The fish is cooked to order, so let them know you want cod or haddock as you arrive.

We chose the lunchtime special; medium cod with chips and mushy peas for a bargain £4.29.

The staff (in pristine Pete's aprons and caps) add the salt and vinegar and a wedge of lemon to your order.

We requested our food open but disappointingly this was ignored and the tray was closed, wrapped and bagged.
The chips looked firm and crispy as they were scooped into the tray but, as everyone knows, once they've been wrapped for a few minutes they become soggy. We weren't in the mood for soggy chips.

The chips are cut nice and chunky. The cod portion was just the right size for a lunchtime nosh. The fish (skin off) was fresh and flaky, the batter light and crisp. The mushy peas were utterly delicious with a creaminess to them.

We will definitely return to Pete's.
