Awesome Chips, Leicester

This chip shop, which opened in November 2015, just serves chips. Forget fish and battered sausages, this place specialises in one thing only; fried potato.

They do it very well and Awesome Chips is already popular. You may find yourself at the end of a queue as you approach for your takeaway.

The theme is very much in the style of a chippy we saw in Bruxelles. It also reminded us, somewhat, of Hot Chip that we visited in Norwich in 2015.

The chips here are fried (in rapeseed oil) for a first time then placed on a shelf above the fryers until they are ordered, when they are fried for a second time. This makes the chips wonderfully crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

An assortment of different sauces are available but before the sauce of your choice is added the staff will add your salt and vinegar or spices. When they do this they measure your portion in your takeaway cone then tip the chips into a pan, add your condiments and shake the chips around so they're evenly coated. We were mightily impressed with this.

One of us ordered the Dutch mayonnaise and the other ordered garlic aioli. Both complimented the chips nicely but if we're honest, we actually prefer our chips without any sauce. The wooden forks here are longer than standard chippy ones so you can reach down to the bottom of the cone.
