Codrophenia, Walkley, Sheffield

Value for money, conversation, top notch food. What more could anyone wish for?

Almost forgot the excellent name, Codrophenia. It's got to be one of the best names for a chippy. You know it.

It's a great shop. No nonsense. Lovely food. We went one evening and ordered cod, chips and peas.

The conversation flowed whilst the food was cooked to order. Politics, personal life, the weather. It's amazing what you can fit in in eight minutes. The bottles of Henderson's Relish were clocked on the shelf. The vegetarian menu included a hemp/tofu burger and veggie sausages.

The cod here is £2.90. Yes, £2.90. Cod and chips is £4.00. The cod is not whale sized nor mini; it's a sensible portion you could expect for the price. If most chip shops sold fish at this size and quality we'd be very happy.

The cod we purchased was superb. Thick cut, fresh, pure white and flakey. The batter was medium thick and quite crunchy with an orange colour. Not one hint of grease.
The chips were pale, medium cut and quite flat. Again, no grease but quite soft. The mushy peas were our favourite type; a perfect combination of mush and bite with loads of flavour.

Salt and vinegar was added to the chips, then a ladle of peas, then the fish, then more peas on top. Served in a polystyrene tray on paper with a paper napkin. The perfect picnic which we scoffed sat on a wall nearby in the setting Walkley sun.
