Mariondale Fish and Chip Shop, Robin Hoods Bay

This is a tiny chippy that also has a separate cafe. The two staff were kept very busy on the day that this Chip Fiend visited, by the hungry queue of customers that snaked outside Mariondale's door.

Some of the customers were ordering half portions between two people, and the staff here were happy to break a fried fish into two pieces and put them on separate trays. A thoughtful offer for customers who prefer smaller portions.

I had cod and chips open, and carried them in a lidded polystyrene tray to the 'quarter deck' - an area overlooking Robin Hoods Bay beach.

The chips were absolutely delicious. I had completely smothered them in vinegar to give them a kick and make them ever so slightly soggy. The cod was pure white, fresh and in satisfying chunky flakes. The batter was a nice pale beige with a light crispness. I saw one customer asking for scraps - receiving a complementary mound in the lid of her tray.

Mariondale's is the only chippy in this quaint seaside village so you'll find it easily if you commence all the way down to the tiny harbour. If you are in an adventurous holiday mood they also fry frog legs here.
