We're fans of busy village chip shops with huge queues. Standing for ten minutes, observing the staff at work; the efficient line-up of the person frying followed by the person taking the orders and doing the first wrap, followed by the person putting the wrapped food into bags and taking the money. Vinny's of Ibstock is this kind of chip shop.
The Chip Fiends visited mid-week, imagine how many hungry customers must pass through its doors on a Friday night.
The menu here is extensive, it would take you weeks to try everything if you didn't just want fish and chips. The shop has a separate counter for kebabs. An extra two staff were working on this section of the shop on the evening we visited.
Items we noted on the menu included battered mushrooms on a stick, 10 onion rings for £1.95, spam fritters, and new home made fishcakes.
If you're not keen on battered fish they will fry it in flour or lemon pepper powder.
The portions here are humongous. There were three of us eating but we only ordered two bags of chips. The two bags could have easily fed four people.
We also ordered haddock and chips, spam fritter, peas, curry and one of the home made fishcakes. It's also worth noting the haddock and cod here are "whale" sized and the edges would hang over the edge of your plate.
The homemade fishcake was delicious; fried in batter and with a load of herbs added to the fish and potato mix. Loads more flavour than the standard chippy fishcakes.
What can be said about the spam fritter? It was as expected, a slab of processed meat not dissimilar to a piece of pink rubber; with a greasy, sickly smokey flavour.
The chips were medium thick, long and very tasty.
The haddock (skin on) was fresh tasting and flakey, the batter was very thick and crunchy.
The curry sauce was standard but seemed to have an extra kick to it. The mushy peas were an emerald colour, smooth with a lot of flavour.
