The Spires Supper Bar, Coventry

The Spires Supper Bar is a memorable name for a chippy on a memorable sounding street: Queen Isabel's Avenue.

Started by a Cypriot family, this business has been open for over fifty years. The chippy is a short walk from Coventry city centre in a residential area near Quinton Park.

On the lunch time that this Chip Fiend visited the chips were just a five-minute wait away from being fried.

I ordered a takeaway of mini fish, chips and curry sauce for just under £5. (The full size haddock portions looked enormous!) There are notices up in the shop saying that for reasons of hygiene the staff will put salt and vinegar on your food, rather than allow customers to handle the condiment bottles. This should not worry fellow fiends as the staff are generous with the shake and splash.

Other items on the menu I also noticed included Faggots chips and peas £4.20, Chip batch £1.70, and potato scallops 60p.

The chips were excellent. Crispy and uneven in shape and size, they had a real homemade quality. The small fish portion was tasty although the batter had gone a little soft.

As it was a sunny day, I sat on the grass in the nearby park to eat lunch which enhanced the experience even further.
