Three Cottages, North Walsham

Three Cottages is a highly renowned family-run chip shop in the market town of North Walsham, voted as one of the top chip shops in the UK.

The Audley family previously owned the Park Chippy in Cromer and after several moves have opened this larger establishment on Bacton Road in North Walsham with a takeaway and restaurant.

For the full Three Cottages experience we recommend you visit the restaurant - but you are advised to book in advance because this popular chippy soon gets full.

This Chip Fiend visited on a Friday at the opening time of 11.45am. Within about 20 minutes the restaurant was full. I ordered medium sized haddock and chips, with minted mushy peas, a wally (gherkin) and a pot of tea. Complementary bread is offered free of charge. The whole meal cost £8.65 and excellent value for money it was too.

Words can't describe how good the fish is here. Delicious sweet flakes of haddock in delicately crispy batter that fills the restaurant with music as the punters bite into it.

The chips are medium cut and crispy and the minted peas excellent too. You can have garden peas instead if you wish and the mint sauce is optional. The wally was only 30p but ridiculously large - almost as big as the fish!

Portion sizes are sensible and the friendly service from the waitresses and the fryers is heart-warming. One of the fryers came into the restaurant to chat to some regular customers.

Other main meal options include hake, skate, scampi and cod roe. If you live near North Norfolk or visiting for a holiday you really should make time to eat here.
