George's Tradition, Restaurant, Long Eaton

One of the first chippy reviews the Chip Fiends wrote was after a visit to George's Tradition takeaway in West Bridgford, Notts. George's is a small local chain of chippies in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire - some outlets being purely takeaways and others having restaurants attached. In December 2014 they opened an upmarket Fish and Chip Kitchen in Nottingham city centre which we have yet to try.

In the meantime, however we thought we would visit the smaller restaurant in Long Eaton. The chippy sits on the outskirts of this small town, in an area surrounded by newly built housing estates, but also has good links to surrounding counties, so it's ideal for locals or visitors to pull over on drives between Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

On one side of the kitchen is the takeaway counter, and the other the restaurant - a clean, modern establishment with chunky wooden tables and soft green furnishings.

It was busy when we arrived so we were lucky to get a table, but as we tucked into our meal the teatime rush subsided and the evening passed with a gentle flow of visitors.

The George's food was of reliable good quality as ever. We plumped for 'finest Scottish haddock' and a small cod portion. Both served with mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. The freshly fried fish had excellent quality batter: crisp and light with jagged peaks - just as we like it. The chips were pale, fluffy, and on the slightly chunky side. (Although I prefer them to also be a little crispier on the outside, I would not criticise them otherwise). Portion size for the whole serving was sensible: not too big, and didn't leave us wanting for more.

You can order wine, beer, soft drinks or a traditional cup of tea with your food. Extras such as bread and butter, and desserts are also available too. Service and atmosphere is swift, courteous, and unpretentious.

Be warned: At busy lunchtimes and evenings in the latter part of the week this place can get very busy. It is not unknown for people to queue outside the restaurant door for a table - that's how good George's chippies are!
