TJ Perkins, Leicester

Look for a blue painted shop with a Pukka Pies sign on it. We'd heard this chippy is called TJ Perkins but there is no sign outside saying this. No name at all, just Fish and Chips and hot Pukka Pies. Pretty red and purple blooms spill from hanging baskets above the door and window.

The shop has an A board that proudly states it serves Traditional Northern fish and chips with no skin and no bone.

Stepping inside the shop is almost like stepping back in time. A fryer and counter takes up most of the space in this small takeaway. An old till, a bowl of home made pickled onions, a novelty tea pot shaped like a chip shop, all on display amongst the bottles of Fentimans and canned soft drinks.
The Chip Fiends wondered for a while what was different about this chippy, then it struck them; the old fryer doesn't have a heated display unit. The cooked fishcakes scooped out of the hot fat were placed in a compartment out of sight.

The freshly cooked chips were placed on a tray and the Chip Fiend was asked if they wished to add the salt and vinegar themselves before the fish was placed on top.

The meal looked very appetising.
The chips (cut from new potatoes) were pale, thin to medium cut and crinkled. The only chippy we previously recall serving crinkle cut chips was Wale's in Nuneaton.

The batter was very light and crisp. Perfect for the moist delicate fillet of cod inside. The food was delicious and soon polished off on a nearby bench.

It should be noted the shop has limited opening hours. Some days it doesn't open at all and on Saturday it is only open at lunchtime. A sign is displayed in the window giving the opening times.

TJ Perkins is on Woodgate, in the Frog Island area of Leicester. Just look for the chippy with no name.
