Platten's Chip Shop, Wells-Next-the-Sea

Platten's is one of two highly recommended chippies on the Quayside of this North-Norfolk seaside resort.

They have a large cafe or you can take your food away in a Platten's box. The counter here is very long and the contents are mouth-watering. The crispy-battered fish looked wonderful as this fiend waited for a specially-ordered Skate to fry. Incidentally - although the fish was cooked to order, it was extremely quick.

Skate, chips and peas came to £7.70. The skate was a substantial wing and the chips were dark golden and on the chunky side. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the in. The mushy peas were in a runny sauce and quite delicious.

If you've never had skate, it's an unusual fish. There are lots of long bones and you have to scrape the flesh away from these bones in long ribbons.

This skate was particularly good - pure white and fresh as a daisy.

If you do eat your fish and chips in the quay, take care of the starlings and sea gulls who come begging. One little rascal almost landed on my Platten's box!
