Andy's Fish Bar, Stapleford

Andy's Fish Bar stood illuminated against the dusk sky like a welcoming beacon just beyond the i4 West Avenue stop.

Inside, 3 Mediterranean gentlemen wearing white Andy's Fish Bar overalls fry the fish whilst women wearing red and white checked Andy's tabards serve the customers.

On the wall, a naive painting of two urchins looking out into a harbour provided interest as we joined the long but fast-moving queue.

The kindly fryers make a point of saying hello to the customers and also waving "thanks, see you" as they leave.

The fish and chip menu is simple including haddock, fish balls and plaice in breadcrumbs for instance) but the quality of the food is excellent.

This fiend went for haddock and chips open, with a small pot of peas. The order totalled £7. The haddock was very fresh: pure white with a thin crispy batter that you could tantalisingly see the fish through in parts. The chips were medium thin and crispy.

There was no bench outside nearby. I could have sat in the bus shelter but instead chose a tree stump on some adjacent grass land. A perfect meal at this part of the journey.
