The Market Place Fish and Chips Restaurant and Takeaway, Chesterfield

The Market Place Fish and Chips Restaurant and Takeaway is a large establishment overlooking Chesterfield Market.

There is a takeaway counter by the door, but if you decide to eat in (as most customers seemed to be doing on this busy Saturday lunchtime) there is a counter towards the back of the shop to place an order, pay, and be handed a tray to take your meal to a table. It's an efficient way of serving that negates the need for waiting staff.

This fiend joined the restaurant queue and ordered small fish, chips and peas. Everything on the menu costs an extra 20p if eaten indoors. So the small cod was £2.20 rather than £2. You get the picture.

The chips were chunky, slightly flat and had a marbled golden colour. The fish was on the chewy side from standing in the cabinet. A generous portion of starchy peas were a good accompaniment to the dish.

Fish and chips in a cafe is arguably one of the few hot meals which suits a cup of tea, and with my cuppa the meal came to a bargain total of £5.20.

Market Place Fish and Chips also serve Yorkshire fish cakes, fried breakfasts, and jacket potatoes.

  1. We've been in today and I must say I was very disappointed as we've been in a few times but today our meal was awful. Overcooked chips barely warm and very chewy and some where hard. The fish again was barely warm and the batter was overcooked to the point of being a crisp. Peas were lukewarm but edible. We ate the fish but left most of the chips and peas. We noticed a few empty plates as we went in with loads left on them. And a couple came in after us and we saw their chips looked the same. It was as if they had either been stood or cooked twice. My Husband who loves Fish and Chips said it was worse ones he'd ever had. Shame as in past they have been beautiful from there. X
