A few months ago someone recommended this as “the best fish and chip shop in Leicester.” They could be right. They told me about the huge fish and the huge queues on a Friday night. I went one Saturday afternoon, expecting to be impressed. The whole front of the shop was open; the concertina doors pulled apart. The chap frying called out to me to ask what I wanted because they fry to order. There were a few in front of me that had ordered fish and I saw a couple of whale sized filets being placed in the hot box to drain. I was beginning to wonder how my fish would fit on a tray. I needn’t have worried, the tray was pretty long. This was a big fish for a “mini”. The batter was a lovely golden colour, a thin and crispy coating for a tasty piece of haddock. The chips were spot on with hardly any hint of grease. Again, crispy outside with a nice floury inner. There was nowhere to sit and eat my lunch so I ate standing whist I admired the nearby architecture. Ratings out of 5: Fish: 5

Upton Fish and Chip Shop, Upton, Lincolnshire

Whilst we were being served at Upton's we overheard one of the staff say they’d had an email from a customer that was due to fly to the nearby airfield at Sturgate and wanted nine fish and eleven portion of chips. Yes, people travel from afar to this chippy. We had travelled over seventy miles ourselves to get here and joined a queue. A queue with a waiting time of twenty minutes that added to the excitement and anticipation of seeing the coal-fired frying range and tasting the fish and chips cooked in beef dripping. This well-renowned fish and chip shop opened in 1948. They keep their standards high by having a relatively small and simple menu of cod, haddock, sausage, peas and curry sauce, and only open twice a week: Friday evenings and Saturday lunchtimes. The chippy appears to be popular with bikers as well as aviators, judging by the motorbikes we saw parked up nearby when we visited. The smell of the smoke coming out of the chimney gave us a nostalgic feeling and we noticed

The potato fritters here are very popular. Whilst the Chip Fiends waited for their fish to be cooked, a group of four adults came in and each ordered a stack of fritters in trays. We wished we'd bought some, as we'd already commented on them looking good. It's worth noting they were square shaped instead of the usual round. We had each ordered a fish special. Fish, chips with peas for one and t'other had curry sauce. We found somewhere outside to lean whilst we chomped. We looked at the row of shops which opened at the end of 2013 in place of a pub that had stood here derelict for a number of years. The food was good. Medium thick chips, and a lot of them. It was a generous amount of food for £4.00. The fish (skinless cod) was a good size, and cut chunky. The peas were fine, if a little bright green and the curry sauce was standard with a nice thick consistency. Ratings out of 5: Chips: 3 Fish: 3 Peas: 3 Curry sauce: 3 Shop and service: 3 Over all: 3
