Donington Fish Bar, Castle Donington, Leics

If you've heard of Castle Donington it may be for one of three reasons: East Midlands Airport is nearby, as is the famous racing circuit, and finally, it is the nearest village to the Monsters of Rock, and more recently, Download festivals.

What you may not know is that the main street is a hive of independent small shops and numerous restaurants.

The Chip Fiends visited Donington Fish Bar on an early Friday evening. The smell permeating down Borough Street made us drool. The takeaway was doing a roaring trade. Staff were frying, loading up the counter cabinet, and serving - all very quickly and efficiently.

We ordered a mini fish and chips, and regular haddock and chips, plus a pot of mushy peas. The food (which came to just over £12) was put into lidded polystyrene cartons and then bagged.

This was a 'car picnic' and the windows soon became steamed up! A regular portion of chips at Donington seemed to be priced slightly above average at £1.95, but they were very good, medium cut chips with nice firm, square edges.

The fish was very good. Falling into delicious big flakes, just as we like it. The proportion of batter to fish was a bit on the thick side for the mini fish, but the regular one was about right. The peas were a good combination of sauce to pea.

The portions were generous so we didn't manage to eat everything on this occasion. One thing that impressed us was that the food was all served piping hot... hence the steamy windows! We recommend Donington Fish Bar and would certainly return again.
