Dad's Lane Fish Bar, Birmingham

Dad's Lane Fish Bar is located in a leafy suburb of Birmingham, just off Pershore Road.

This award winning chippy, established in 1969, offers a wide and varied menu, with some impressive fish options including hake, plaice, fresh roe, and salmon, as well as the more usual cod and haddock. Most of the fish came at £4.50 a portion. There were butterfly prawns at £3.20 a portion. Faggots, chips and peas cost £3. Veggie options included our beloved battered mushrooms.

The chippy has a takeaway and a separate restaurant area. It was a sunny day on our visit so we opted to eat al fresco at a picnic bench on adjacent grassland.

One chip fiend had battered plaice and regular chips, whilst t'other had battered haddock, regular chips, and a large pot of mushy peas. Fiend 2 had wanted to try hake, but none was available on this day.

The food was served in a card box (as many posh chippies use these days), with a napkin and plastic fork. The splash n shake was executed by staff.

The regular chip portion was huge. It would've been more sensible to have ordered a smaller portion (£1.40) on this occasion as we weren't able to carry the leftovers home!

The chips were chunky and the quality of the freshly-fried fish was very good - particularly the plaice which had a lovely creamy quality. However, the fish was marred slightly by the batter, which, although tasting good and crispy, was a bit too thick. We had to leave a lot of the batter uneaten.

On the whole, Dad's Lane is a pleasant local chippy with an impressive menu.
