Aren't 'local' chippies the best? No fancy stuff, just perfectly-cooked, simple food, and friendly service.
Take for instance the Apollo Fish Bar in Carlton, Nottingham.
This chippy caught our eye a while ago, so it's long been on a list of places to visit. It was the signage that attracted us. A cartoon fish doffing its hat and a promise that 'table waters' are served here, were a very seductive combination.
This fiend was served so quickly by the friendly owner, Mick, that I didn't even get time to look at the menu. I was in and out of the shop in seconds!
The sweet and tender haddock fell apart in large, moist flakes and the batter was pale and light as a feather. The chips were firm and chunky. The portion size spot on.
An excellent £4.70 well spent.
If you are driving between Southwell and Nottingham and the Apollo is open, then I strongly recommend you pull over for something to eat.
I'm just kicking myself for not ordering any table waters...
