Cappleman's, Scarborough

Cappleman's is an award winning chippy in a residential area on Raleigh Street, just off Columbus Ravine. It must be a real treat to live nearby and nip round to buy your Friday night supper.

On this Saturday lunchtime some of the local customers were ordering their fish 'bald' - that's without batter to those not in-the-know.

This Chip Fiend ordered battered plaice, chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce. The service was excellent, with the young member of staff asking if I wanted to put my salt and vinegar on the chips before she put the fish on top. I was also asked if I wanted a wedge of lemon or 'scraps' and was handed a plastic fork wrapped in a paper napkin. The mushy peas and tartare sauce came in separate pots and the whole meal was compiled in a flat cardboard box.

The plaice was fried to order in the most amazingly thin, crispy batter. The fish having a deliciously, fresh, creamy quality. The chips also had a light crispness on the outside.

The only downside to the visit was that I couldn't find a bench nearby to sit and eat. Since this review was written, however, we have heard that Cappleman's have added a bench outside.
