Crown Fisheries, Leeds

Visited March 2014.

The Crown stands in the shadow of Leeds Corn Exchange. It is therefore easy to find and well worth a visit.

The menu is a veritable cornucopia of deep fried delights from bean and sausage fritters to deep fried mars bars. The Crown offer bargain priced 'light meals' such a small portion of fish and chips with bread and butter and a drink (£3.50), or small sausage and chips with bread and butter and a drink (£2.15).

On our visit one Chip Fiend went for regular fish and chips £4.75, whilst the other Fiend tried a homemade Yorkshire fish cake, chips and a mushy pea fritter.

All the food was made to order and of a very high quality. The fish tasted of the sea. The fish cake and pea fritter were both very light, not stodgy.

We were also asked if we wanted complimentary 'scraps' - comforting little nuggets of batter that popped and melted in the mouth.

The food was served in sensible portions which meant we were satisfied and there was no waste at the end of the meal. There is a small seating area in front of the counter, so we sat inside and soaked up the ambience - all the customers were referred to as 'love' by the lady behind the counter.

The Crown is open Monday - Saturday from 11.15am to 10pm.
