George's Tradition, West Bridgford, Nottingham

Visited 19/10/2013

Part of a local, East Midland's chain, George's has an easy-to-follow system of set menus which the customer can easily identify and order by number. A regular fish and chip meal with mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce will only set you back £4.95, and you can upgrade to a larger portion for an extra £1.

The meal is served in a flat cardboard box, so you can close the lid to keep the meal warm if you are carrying it home. A sign on the counter indicates that you can ask for complimentary tartare sauce or a wedge of lemon, but both of these were provided on this occasion without the Chip Fiends having to ask.

The branch in West Bridgford is a smaller one without a restaurant. The shops are clean, and all have the same 'corporate' George's 'look'. Certificates are displayed to demonstrate the quality of the chain. The chips were very fresh with a good bite and the fish was excellent too. Flakey with a crisp batter which was not too thick. The mushy peas and tartare sauce are served in separate little pots and wooden knives and forks are provided. The over all feeling is of 'posh' yet inexpensive fish and chips.

A recycling bin nearby for the cardboard containers would be a good idea - the litter bin outside was full of takeaway boxes on this visit!
