The Chips are Down: Chippies that have Closed or Changed Since we Reviewed Them

As the Chip Diaries finishes its fifth year of entries we thought it would be a good opportunity to highlight some of the chip shops that have since gone or changed ownership.

It's sad to see some of the establishments we have visited close, but the memories of mouth-watering fish and chips will linger on!

The following is (at present) a list of those shops which have closed, changed name, changed ownership or notably altered their appearance.

Dani’s Fish Bar in Leicester is now called Gill, yet the staff still wear Dani’s uniforms! We have returned a couple of times since the first review and enjoyed the chunky chips and generous portions.

Gill Fish Bar, Leicester

Wale's Fish and Chips, Nuneaton has permanently closed. This chippy was one of the few places where we have had crinkle cut chips. We ate in the restaurant and were also impressed by the wrapping skills of its staff when we had a takeaway.

Moulin Rouge, Nottingham appears to have changed ownership. The place has certainly altered a lot with a new interior and confusing system of ordering at the takeaway counter.

Apollo Fish Bar

Mick, the owner of Apollo Fish Bar in Carlton, Nottingham has retired. This chip shop is now run by Dean, and apparently it is still a great chippy, so we will have to pay another visit.

Crown Fisheries, Leeds has permanently closed.
Betty’s Traditional Fish and Chips, Sheffield has altered its name and ownership several times and never seemed to make a go of it.
Billy’s Fish Bar, Nottingham appears to have new ownership and serves all kinds of fast food including pizzas, burgers and wraps. In fact, pizzas seem to be the main concern judging by the website.

The Font in Leicester where we once tried fish and chips has closed down.
Humber Road Chip Shop in Beeston, Nottingham has supposedly changed hands.
Carringtons Fish and Chips in Nottingham have improved since our visit in 2015 and now serve fish and chips with a wedge of lemon. (The street has gone a bit more upmarket near the station and Carringtons have kept up with the Joneses).
Hot Chip, Norwich: Closed down and became a mobile business, but haven’t posted anything on social media since 2016.
Fish @ Tony’s in Derby have changed hands and is now called Beaufort Fish Bar.

Carlo's Catch, Spondon, closed before we could review it, and our write-up was done in retrospect as the place became part of Derby's Zan Fish chain.
Ocean Blue, Leicester has closed and reopened several times and probably has new owners since we reviewed it.
Codrophenia in Sheffield which we gave 5/5 has sadly closed down.
Angelo’s, Wellington Street, Burton on Trent is no more.

The Middle Chippy

The Middle Chippy, Whitby where we ate a homemade fish cake has permanently closed.

Fish and Liquor, Brighton has shut up shop.

Naylor’s Fish and Chips on Aberdeen Walk, Scarborough, closed and changed into Hiley’s Traditional Fish and Chips, and that now has permanently closed.

Donelli’s Loughborough was new when we visited in 2016, but has already closed down. This was a shop where our fish was served broken in half to fit into its box!

Donelli's Loughborough

Naked Fish, Bridlington where we tried Scarborough Woof for the first time has closed. Jack’s Chippy has replaced the premises, a business established in 1980.

Naked Fish, Bridlington

Young’s Fish and Chips by Petrou Brothers in Cambridge is now called The Catch.

Welford Chippy, Leicester, burnt down.

Fish Delight, Leicester is a mystery. It doesn’t seem to be open any more.

Ripley’s Fish and Chips in Ripley hasn't changed hands but they have redecorated and the fish tiles and murals have gone. The style is modern with bare wood and grey walls.

Ripley's

Big Fish, Beeston is under new management since our visit in May 2017.

The Real Fish and Chip Co., Newark has permanently closed. (The chippy where a fish was dropped off our plate!)

Real Fish and Chip Co.

Trinity Fish and Chips in Uttoxeter where we enjoyed a café meal have finished frying.

The wonderful Antonio’s in Long Eaton, Derbyshire has closed due to retirement of the owner. This was another of our 5/5 chippies.

If you hear of any other of our Chip Diary chippies that have closed or altered, please let us know!
