Cookies, Market Drayton, Shropshire

A fish and chip shop and cafe with waitress service. Just what was needed on a crisp December day.

A quick glance at the menu showed that the recommended meal was a fish supper (cod or plaice) with choice of sauce (peas, curry sauce or gravy). I went for a large cod meal at £12 with a mug of tea for £1.80.

Cookies has been frying since 1960. The menu proudly stated that they only used locally sourced potatoes and that they are peeled and chipped on the premises.

I didn’t have to wait long for my lunch which came piping hot and looking delicious.

The mushy peas were very good indeed. A sloppy texture, ideal for chip-dipping, and lovely creamy taste.

The cod came in a thin, crisp batter. It was flattish at one end, and chunky at the other. The flat end seemed more moist and the delicate flakes fell apart as I pronged them with my fork. It had a lovely, fresh, clean taste.

The chips did indeed have a homemade look about them. They were cut quite slim and in irregular lengths. Some being quite long. Quite a dark golden colour, but tasting pleasantly of potato. They didn’t need a lot of salt.

The service was very good and the cafe absolutely spotless.
