Foley's, Kidderminster, Worcestershire

At last it seems like the Chip Diaries can include an entry for Kidderminster that is slightly above average.

All looked promising for Foleys (Award winning fish and chips) on the outskirts of town. The chips were being fried fresh for the lunchtime queue. The shop had signs up for a variety of tempting fayre such as fresh roe and battered chips, and there was a cheery sign up telling me that Accord new potatoes were being fried.

If you want a large fish or a mini haddock you request those. However, I had already planned to go for the cheapest lunchtime special possible to see how it rated. It’s so rare to find a chip meal for much under £8 these days and the mini cod special at Foleys is £5.50. This is for cod, chips and a sauce served in a box. (The mini haddock special doesn't include a sauce). Card payment accepted.

As this is more a take-home or eat in the car type of place I found a patch of grass nearby for a picnic. No benches were in sight of the shop.

The chips were chunky and fresh but not quite as tasty as they looked. Maybe they needed more salt.

The curry sauce was ok and made a nice dunking dip but was a bit msg in texture.

The cod flesh was fresh but the flakes fell into crumbs so were difficult to spear on the fork. As the fish was from the hotbox the batter had gone limp and was a bit thick and sticky in parts.

Definitely a shop to order a fresh fish on arrival.
