The Fryer's Delight (Cafe Meal), Holborn, London

As this is our tenth anniversary of The Chip Diaries it’s been nice to revisit some of the chip shops we’ve eaten at over the past decade.

One of the Chip Fiends visited the Fryer’s Delight in 2014 for a takeaway. On our latest visit the weather was a bit damp so we had the ideal opportunity to eat in the cafe off Formica-topped tables.

Between us we had cod, chips and curry sauce, and haddock, chips and mushy peas. We shared a fat pickled onion and both had a cup of tea. The fish was fried to order and was soon ready, even though The Fryer’s Delight was busy.

It was a pleasant meal and inexpensive for London. (It came to approx £28 in total).

The fish had moist, tender flakes, and the batter was thin and delicate.

The chips were chunky and fairly crisp on the outside.

As you might expect down south, the peas were from a tin, but not as bad as those inedible, radioactive green sort you sometimes come across.

The curry sauce was reminiscent of some we had eaten in Bicester. Quite runny but with a nice flavour. One of the Chip Fiends poured it over the chips as it wasn’t clinging too well for dunking.

We left satisfied and not stodged. We are glad the signage and branding is unchanged.
